Do they know how to install fences? Do they have a good reputation in your locality?
o Is the company bonded and covered by insurance? Does the company have general liability insurance and workers compensation policies? You should ask the contractor to include you in their insurance policy when installing your fence.
Does the business have a valid license? Verify their license with the Contractors State license Board.
Are they Better Business Bureau members? Are they rated well by the BBB
Are they hiring and employing their own employees, or are sub-contractors used?
Are they aware of local codes for building, pools and fences? They can point you to the best place to get this information.
Compare their fence prices to others. On their contract, they must list their license.
It is always nice to know what will be in your yard. I like to know what will go in my yard.
Ask them how much time they need to plan and ask if you can get a specific completion date.
How long will it take to make a payment? Do they ask for a deposit? Californians should only pay 10% of the total cost or $1000.00 to reserve the fencing job. As a rule, you should not pay more than 50% of the total cost. You may want to check with your local laws. When is payment due? According to the size of your job, you might have to make progress payments or pay only the final balance.
Are there any warranties on the fence material and its installation?
Before you contact the fence contractor, be prepared with these details:
Are you and your neighbor on the same page about a fence replacement? The neighbor may even pay to build the fence.
What fence style and height do you like?
Are you able to estimate the number of linear feet you will need for your fence?
Is there easy access to the fence line? You will need to dispose of an old fence, and possibly brush. Is it possible for a tractor to get as close to the boundary fence as necessary?
Is it on flat or uphill terrain? Does the soil have a soft texture or is it rocky?
Fence contractors won’t be responsible for any damage caused to underground utilities that aren’t marked.
It is the responsibility of you, as a customer, to secure any necessary building permits.
